Both servers have been formated and are running. We are awaiting the DNS servers to spread through the net before we can do anything.

Joe’s Update (4/6/07): I am presently uploading the rather frakking huge database to Athena’s server from my laptop, which will take around roughly 14 hours to complete as I write this.

Joe’s Second Update (5:30 P.M. ET on 4/6/07): The database is currently be imported into mysql on the new Athena, and after that the wiki files will be restored to the new Apollo server. Hopefully everything should be up by early morning on Saturday, 4/7.

Some more tech advice: When you change servers, set the TTL in the DNS to a short time, like a few minutes or an hour. An hour before your switchover, set it to one minute. Then zero. Then nobody has it in the cache, and you can switch everybody at once to the new address (which has a more standard time to live.)

Darn, everything I post it says is spam, no URLS or anything.

Its the url thats in your name which seems to be thinking its spam. Its thinking you are a spammer because you are not a registered user and you have posted the same url in your name several times in a row. Its a bit stupid because its an old spam trick that isn’t really used anymore. Anyway I added your site to the white list and changed the scoring for active posters.

While everyone is waiting for the servers to come back up, I thought it would be prudent to point out that a competitor wiki has popped up.

    encyclopediagalactica.prometheusunderground.com
    Their tag line is
The First Online Encyclopedia Devoted Exclusively to the Re-imagined Battlestar Galactica Series

I’m a bit miffed at that tag line.
I’m hoping that articles here aren’t going to find their way over there.

If they do, we should pummel them with internet rocks or something.

Well, he’s correct in that Battlestar Wiki covers all of the BSG’s, whereas he’s focusing exclusively on RDM.

If it’s the same guy that I’m thinking it is, he used to be a contributor here (formerly known as Ricimer and later the Merovingian).

Anyhow, it’s not really a competitor. It appears that the site is a one man show, and a place for V to construct and organize his analysis of the show.

I do agree that we ought to keep an eye out to make sure there’s no copyright violations (note that the headers for the episode guide appear to be copy and pasted), but we that cuts both ways. We need to make sure that we don’t use ANY of his content, since he appears to hold exclusive copyright on the content (not Creative Commons or GFDL or whatever).

Otherwise… more power to him. I’m curious to see what develops.

SV said everything that came to my mind.

This new site is not so much a competitor, it’s just a one-man project that appears to be a soap box for personal analysis for the show.

Which is fine, because the MediaWiki software is great for that sort of approach as well. Makes it very easy to categorize thoughts and other information.

We just need to make sure that copyrights are respected all around.

    And yes, it’s clearly Ricimer/The Merovingian/V.

    So say we all.

Are you able to access the Wiki yet? I’m still getting DNS errors on *.battlestarwiki.org, so it looks like the DNS over here hasn’t picked us up yet.

From where I’m sitting (Poland), BSG Wiki is still down.

If theres copy and pasting from the BSWiki direct to his site then we should send take down notices to the web host. The tagline is also misleading because we WERE the first ever RDM encyclopedia, it was only later that we began covering the other aspects.

I’m more worried that he seems to have closely affiliated himself with Hangarbay5 forums and will try to steal a lot more of our content and make his site a direct competitor. I think we need to catalogue any copyright violations and send an email t his host to nip this in the bud before it gets too big and uncontrollable.

    Talk about bitter

I just got off a 12 hour shift of work. I want to let you know that I been working on this every chance I get.

I hope to have everything operationial by night time Saturday.

We are really close in opening up the new server. The DNS will not be updated until basically i give Joe the go ahead, but it will be done before Monday for sure.

The DNS has been updated. Actually, I’d already did it. lol

It’s now just a matter of restoring the Mediawiki files again, running the db maintenance tools, and so forth.

I’m with Shane that we should be done by Monday.

As for Merv’s encyclopedia, once we get Trac loaded we can report and keep track of any infringements that occur in any direction, as well as any other issues that may arise in the future.

For those who don’t know, Trac is a ticket system, as well as a collaboration tool to better keep track of all our projects.

Hmm, over here in The Netherlands I’m experiencing a strange phenomenon.

When I ping www.battlestarwiki.org, I get a response in 187 ms average, which is quite a normal time for a NLUS round trip. When I go to www.battlestarwiki.org in my browser, I get an empty page.

When I ping or try to visit en.battlestarwiki.org and blog.battlestarwiki.org, I get a DNS error.

So somehow, my DNS knows www.battlestarwiki.org but not the other subdomains. Weird…

BTW, the IP I get for www.battlestarwiki.org is 74.53.78.35

Catrope, en and blog are now ping-able at my end.

It takes a while for the DNS to propagate — up to 48 hours worldwide, depending on net conditions.
